WE CONDEMN THE RECENT SUPREME COURT RULING ALLOWING FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PUBLIC CHARGE. THE RULE IS UNFAIR AND UN-AMERICAN AND WILL PREVENT HARDWORKING IMMIGRANTS FROM RECEIVING THE BASIC HEALTH CARE, FOOD, AND HOUSING THAT THEIR TAXES SUPPORT.
Fortunately, California stands with immigrants and protects those who use MediCal and other health care programs, regardless of status and ability to pay. Legal immigrants and those without documents are covered by state funds, save healthcare dollars, and improve insurance pools. California gets it, as do millions of people across America who reject the fear mongering and scapegoating tactics that seek to divide us.
It is not only a moral imperative to care for those who are most vulnerable in our society; it is also good for our healthcare system and good for the economy. Research proves that immigrants contribute significantly more financially than what they receive in health care. Data shows that policies that limit the number of immigrants coming to the United States are bad for the economy.
This country is built on hope and hard work, and we know that we are only as strong as the most vulnerable among us. It is this optimism and tenacity that has created one nation of immigrants that will prevail over these challenging times and specific threats.
We stand with leaders who stand with immigrants, uphold our shared values, and know that immigrants make America stronger.
